![]() ![]() Opal & Tourmaline Have Become the Staple Birthstones of October.īirthstones are gemstones that accompany a birth month, each having a unique meaning and historical significance also represent the month of a person's birth. Rose Cut Diamond and Rose Cut Gemstone Jewelry.Today, only a few mines in San Diego County occasionally produce gem-quality tourmaline. With the death of Cixi in 1908 and the subsequent overthrow of the Qing dynasty, the heyday of tourmaline mining in California ended. To feed Empress Dowager Cixi’s obsession with the vibrant colour, San Diego mines sent 120 tons of gem rubellite to Imperial China between 19. In 1898, California’s first commercial tourmaline mine opened at the Himalaya pegmatite in the Mesa Grande district – famed for the production of fine rubellite. The Dunton mine, near Plumbago Mountain, is the most prolific producer of tourmaline in Maine. Even today, a quarry at Mount Mica intermittently produces various colours of gem tourmaline. Maine’s first major tourmaline deposit was discovered in 1820 at Mount Mica in Paris, by two young boys exploring the local area. For more than a century, they have sporadically yielded large quantities of tourmaline. ![]() In the United States, both Southern California and Maine host several pegmatite districts. Old tunnel entrance at the Tourmaline King mine. These and other cases of mistaken identity continued for centuries until scientists recognised tourmaline as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s. A Spanish conquistador found green tourmaline crystals in Brazil in the 1500s and confused the stones with emerald. One of the “rubies” in the Russian crown jewels, the “Caesar’s Ruby” pendant, is actually red (rubellite) tourmaline. Among the most popular are the pink and red rubellites, the emerald green “chrome” tourmalines, and the neon green and blue-to-violet “paraíba” tourmalines.īecause of its vast range of colours, tourmaline was often mistaken for other gemstones. Perhaps this is why ancient mystics believed that this October birthstone could inspire artistic expression – it has a colour palette for every mood. Very few gems match tourmaline’s dazzling array of colours. The name comes from the Sinhalese word toramalli, which means “stone with mixed colours”, because it often has multiple colours in one crystal. Tourmaline is the newer October birthstone. The mines are a tourist destination, and getting to them requires taking a dirt road through dense forests of pine and oak, past scrubby plateaus of cacti and shrubs, and up winding mountain roads. Querétero, a state in Mexico, is known for producing fire opal in yellow, orange and reddish orange to red, some with good play-of-colour. Its treasures are buried in steep cliffs that tower over the landscape. Another mine, in Ethiopia’s Shewa Province, yields the coveted black opal, as well as orange, white and crystal opal. Gems unearthed here range in body colour from white, yellow, orange and brownish red to “chocolate” brown. Travel 340 miles (about 550 kilometres) north of the capital Addis Ababa and up 8,000 feet (2,400 metres) to where miners pry opal from shafts dug into the side of a plateau. In Ethiopia, the October birthstone is found near the village of Wegel Tena, in Wollo Province. Two pieces of boulder opal, which is found only in Queensland. The laptop does support Dolby Atmos though, so it will work with compatible external speakers. However, it just doesn’t get loud, and the bass is lacking. They are clear, even at the highest volume. In our experience, the speakers were just okay. So I think ASUS made the right choice for the 2023 model.įor audio, the laptop is equipped with 2 Smart Amp speakers that claim to produce a louder sound than regular speakers. That high of a resolution felt overkill for a 13.4-inch display, and I much prefer having a QHD+/165Hz panel. Previously, there was an option for a 4K/60FPS panel. It is a little small for proper gaming sessions, but on the go, it’s good enough. With the maximum refresh rate of 165Hz, gaming on this display is amazing, except maybe its size. Colours are accurate, and the display gets pretty bright, especially for HDR content. The resolution is great at QHD+ and the extra vertical height is perfect for productivity applications. The display is also touch enabled and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass DXC.Īs expected, the display is fantastic. The panel is Pantone validated, supports Dolby Vision HDR and covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space. It has a refresh rate of 165Hz, a 3ms response time and resolution of 2560×1600. There is one display option this time around – a 13.4-inch, 16:10, QHD+ IPS panel which ASUS calls “ROG Nebula Display”. Altogether, the design and build quality of the Flow X13 is excellent. The top bezel also houses an IR camera beside the webcam, and it works well for Windows Hello facial recognition. Bezels look modern and since it’s a convertible, the power button moved to the right edge. The hinge tension is perfect, and the laptop can be opened with one finger. Just like before, the hinge can rotate 360°, allowing the device to be used in 4 positions – laptop, tablet, tent, stand. ![]() Branding is subtle throughout the exterior of the laptop, except for the ROG plaque on the lid, which is now triangular. The edges are squared off, but still comfortable to hold even in tablet mode. The chassis is made out of a Magnesium alloy while the lid is made out of Aluminium, resulting in a laptop that is rigid while being light. You still get the same sleek, stealthy design with characteristic elements like the wave-pattern on the lid and the 360 degree hinge. Does the laptop offer better value than its predecessors, or has ASUS lost its vision for the Flow X series? Read on in my review to find out.Īt first glance, the 2023 model of the Flow X13 looks similar to the 2021 model that we reviewed previously. The company was trying something new in the thin-and-light gaming laptop segment with its custom GPU enclosure called the XG Mobile, and it proved to be quite popular.ĪSUS has now launched the 2023 model of the Flow X13, updated with Ryzen 7000 series CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 40-series GPUs. ![]() About two years ago, we reviewed the ASUS ROG Flow X13 and we loved it. ![]() The Range Rover Sport will go further off road, too. ![]() That’s a lot further than most petrol-electric SUVs can manage before reverting to unleaded.īig, comfortable and classy, the Range Rover Sport is expensive but does what it does so well Tax breaks for plug-ins make these cars the default choice for company car drivers, and with a large 38.2kW battery they can travel up to 70 miles on electricity alone. There’s a strong case to make for these models being the picks of the range. If sir or madam prefers to travel in near silence, there are two plug-hybrids at either 440hp or 510hp. Predictably, this model drinks like a rugby player on a stag-do. Using mild-hybrid tech in such a powerful and heavy car would be like trying to push back a hurricane with a hand fan, so Land Rover hasn’t bothered. There’s also a mild-hybrid petrol, with 400hp and serious performance, but a thirst to match.įaster still is the 530hp V8. A 350hp diesel adds a bit more punch without any penalty at the pumps. The entry-point to the range is the 300hp diesel, which uses mild-hybrid power to take the strain off the engine and so improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Like its more respectable brother, the raffish Range Rover Sport is packed with technology, including a choice of high-tech mild and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. That’s a pretty good place to start, as the latest Range Rover is one of the best luxury SUVs you can buy. Under the metal, it shares much with the Range Rover. Today’s car is the third generation to follow this template. Preserve most of the regal luxury of the range-topping Range Rover but tune the suspension for B-road adventures as well as stately cruising. It’s a formula Land Rover has employed before. In and out of trouble, a bit of a cad, but secretly the old dowager’s favourite. If the Range Rover is the lord of the manor, the Range Rover Sport is the rebellious little brother. ![]() They even followed up the next day to make sure all was OK. Like I literally had to take the liberty to, by hand convert each and every patch which had the full data just to make sure it's authentic. Not to mention the envelopes in those are six stage AADDRR envelopes which don't exactly translate to an ADSR very well.Ĭlick to expand. You don't say? You'd think in 2023 they'd take notes from Kontakt (before they ousted legacy CD sample support) and some how automate that shit properly, knowing that the effects and modulation envelopes can be easily deciphered by Kontakt 5 itself. Ever seen the modulation matrix on an EMU EIV or the number of filters in it? No way you can "translate" that to another sampler format and expect it to come out correctly. Even directly converting an Akai cd on an actual EMU EIV (which has to be done painfully one program at a time), doesn't get you anything other than a basic playback program with the sample intact. Those more than likely only work 'the way they should' on an S1000 or S3000. The S1000 has one single filter, the S3000 has a completely different filter slope and also has an option card for a Low/High/Bandpass filter. Those cd's were made to go on any sampler that supported the S1000/3000 CD format, and not all of those samplers had the same internal architecture. The 'standard' S1000 for example has one LFO, the S3000 has two. On a side note, I've got tons of old Akai and EMU cd's and most of the Akai stuff doesn't seem to have anything set as far as modulation goes. Most of the time the envelopes or filter are closed and need to be adjusted just to hear it. ![]() It's a half ass piece of shit software, with a developer who does nothing but blame the user's machine when it doesn't work anywhere remotely close to how it's advertised.I've converted plenty of my CD's with it and got nothing but a basic patch that just plays back the sample as it is. ![]() ![]() She called me back within an hour and said she had one. To recharge the battery, the Escape PHEV has a Level 1/Level 2 AC charging port located on the left front fender. In EV Later mode, drivers can switch to full gas-hybrid driving to conserve electric power for use later, while a new EV Charge mode continues to charge the battery while driving and generate electric power for future use. With EV Now mode, the vehicle operates only on electric power, which would likely be the best choice for daily commuting or short trips around town. In Auto EV mode, which I used, the vehicle decides on its own whether to run on gasoline or electric power. The Escape PHEV has four modes so drivers can select the setting most suitable for their individual needs. The transfer between the gasoline and electric power was seamless – without the screen display you’d be hard-pressed to identify which source was moving the vehicle. Manufacturers are responding with a growing number of PHEVs arriving in the marketplace, adding to other green options, such as pure EVs and hybrids, that consumers have to consider. And combined, the system still delivers impressive fuel efficiency. With its gasoline engine on standby to get me where I want to go when the electric power dries up, it’s a way of relieving range anxiety while providing pure electric propulsion for those short runs around town or to work. If you share my anxiety and concerns, perhaps a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) would be a compromise worth considering. If I’m planning a road trip, range anxiety is a primary concern – will I be able to find somewhere to recharge the battery when it runs low will the charging station listed on my app be available or will I have to wait until the current user has “filled up?” Personally, I’m not convinced the infrastructure to support the use of EVs beyond a short-haul/commuter role exists. – For many people, myself included, there are still some issues that cause concern regarding electric vehicles. 2022 Ford Escape PHEV - Plug-in Hybrid provides relief from range anxiety. ![]() According to Monito's search engine, PayPal is one of the worst options for converting currency and sending money abroad because they apply very weak exchange rates to your transfers.Use an international money transfer service instead of PayPal to send money abroad.
